The Keep: Kitchen and Great Chamber
Looking south in the western portion of the keep. The kitchen
was on the ground floor, while the first floor was partitioned
into a great chamber (north) and privy chamber (south), with its
two high windows. When the
chambers of the southern range were constructed, a bridge at the
first floor level connected the original privy chamber
to a new privy or
"lady" chamber on the southern range, and the original privy chamber
in the keep
was repurposed as a "presence chamber." The masonry above the
presence chamber is part of the fifteenth century second-storey addition
with its wider windows.
The kitchen contained a well at the northern end and a well and two holding areas for live fish on the southern end. |
