writing slope -- click for enlargement

planThe Parlor - Writing Slope.

Like many of the objects found in Barley Hall, this is based on documentary evidence -- in this case, a detailed room-by-room inventory of the possessions of William Snawsell's fellow-goldsmith and neighbor John Collan and on graphic evidence -- a contemporary Flemish painting of St. Jerome translating the Bible.

The oak writing slope has inkwells hollowed from the tips of cow horns.
