Battlefield Centre:
King Richard's Well
According to legend, Richard III stopped
to drink from this well during the battle. Older Ricardians recall sliding
under barbed wire fences and hiking through brambles to reach the nineteenth-century
cairn on a farmer's field. Some made annual pilgrimages to clear the duckweed
from the small spring The roses planted to the side of the cairn appear
to be R. chinensis 'versicolor,' or another variety that blooms
with color variations, an appropriate choice for a battle marked chiefly
by the shifting loyalties of some of the principal players. |
