This is a test message to verify the operation of this form. I do not teach Richard III in history or in literature.

This is a test message to verify the operation of this form. I am hoping that we will receive comments from teachers on a variety of levels. This will help us to create more content of use to teachers and their students.

I couldn't enter name and address above, but they are Charles T. Wood and charles.t.wood@dartmouth.edu. I teach Richard mainly to first-year students and concentrate not just on trying to find out who the historical Richard was, but also on trying to define the difference between the Richard who appears in history and the one who appears in drama and fiction.

I am an adjucnt faculty member at the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science. I teach a Shakespeare and American Culture course (pretty much a Shakespeare and Film course) to undergraduates. I am teaching Shakespeae, so obvioulsy I am teaching from a dramatic point of view, but I do like to give them a background on the history of Ricahrd III so they can compare Shakespeare's character to the history. This is an elective course in the school of General Studies..no English majors. This is my first time teachin Richard III

I just recently browsed the site so I haven't used it for class yet, but I like how the resourses are geared to people of different levels and how it is very welcoming to a beginner.. the Back to Basics etc. I think that is really valuable since the whole Wars of the Roses is a bit difficult to explain sometimes. I just started teaching Richard III this week, so I don't have much feedback yet, but I will in a week or two.

Just a personal interest. Masters in English lit. Have taught English lit and American lit in public schools for 27 years. Going to England for the first time this month. Am very concerned about More's and Shakespeare's interpretation of Richard III's guilt, esp. the princes.

Jacksonville University of Jacksonville, Florida, is a private, independent, coeducational liberal arts university founded in 1934,and awarding bachelor's and master's degrees. While my primary function at the University is as a librarian, I also teach English Composition to beginning freshmen. In the second semester of this course, I have been using Tey's The Daughter of Time as my text.

The focus of the course is on composition and research. After reading and discussing Tey, the students evaluate the research strategy of the fictional Grant and Carradine, evaluate film versions of Shakespeare's Richard (Tower of London - 1939, Richard III - 1955, and Richard III - 1995), and compare Shakespeare's Richard to Tey's. As a final project, the students research and present other examples of historical contoversy.

Norfolk Academy is a private prep school, covering grades 1-12. I teach in the senior high division, grades 10-12. Richard III figures prominently in two of the courses I teach: Modern European History and Alternate History. I've used THE DAUGHTER OF TIME as summer preparation for MEH for the last twenty + years, because it -- and Richard saga in general -- show the way historians fashion history. Alt-Hist is a one-year-old work-in-progress, described below.

John M. Ford's award-winning fantasy novel THE DRAGON WAITING provides the centerpiece for Alt-Hist. It is a "what-if?" novel that changes a number of turning-point events (the Byzantine Empire is still powerful and in the process of reconquering the Renaissance West, for example). Ford manipulates a staggering number of genuine historical people and events, climaxing with a Byzantine-supported Tudor invasion of Yorkist England.) The novel also includes a number of purely fantastic elements (wizards, vampires). The course in general investigates how altered events would lead to altered futures. As summer preparation we read Orson Scott Card' s PASTWATCH; then we read Poul Anderson's THE SORROW OF ODIN THE GOTH. Both of these involve the impact of alterations of key events. The Ford novel and its climactic but changed version of the Wars of the Roses, is what we spend most of our time on. We break each chapter down into seminar reports, comparing the "reality" with the fictional versions. We cover politics, religion, and a variety of other topics. The students conclude the course by drawing an arbitrary ALTERED turning point-event from a hat (like Arch-Duke is not assassinated at Sarajevo or Kennedy survives Dallas). They must construct a logical "history" from the changed event and defend it before the class.

I teach Drama and English Literature at Billings West High School in Billings, Montana. My class reading the play The Final Trial of Richard III by Mary Schaller, available from Dramatic Publishing Co. Ian McKellen's 1995 RichardIII and Al Pacino's film, Looking for Richard have been an aide in discovering Shakespeare's version of history. We might perform later this summer. This is the third year that I have used Richard III in my Drama class.

Dramatizing the action in Shakespeare's play on stage has led several of my students to become Shakespeare enthusiasts. They seem to like the violent nature of the bard's King.

I teach all levels of education at privately-arranged lectures.

I found the Guildhall Library in London to be especially helpful, inasmuch as it has practically every primary source regarding Richard III and those around him. I am really excited about the resources on this site, because I can't always fly back to London to consult those sources! The students I've attracted seem to be more interested in the people than many books cover.

I am currently teaching 12th grade English Literature on Guam. My students have a unique cultural diversity. I am in need of information, lesson plans, etc. that I can access and print out for my student's use. Most do not have access to computers and we do not have access to them in the classrooms. I would appreciate any assistance you can give

I am attempting to introduce this play to my students, but getting the copies of the play in sufficient numbers is expensive for me. Is there a contact that provides books for teachers at a reduces cost? Remember, we are on Guam and our resources are limited.

I have been teaching Shakespeare to undergraduate students for 5 years in Soonchunhyang Univ. in S. Korea. I teach Richard III in such a way as Richard was a historical figure but the very Richard who you can see in the text was created as a dramatic figure by Shakespeare. Politics is very popular in S. Korea. So I lead my students to understand how the historical figure of Richard can be recreated dramatically for ideological or political purposes, as well as theatrical ones. But anyway my permanent concern is how to teach Shakespeare to Korean students more easily.

Two things which I love to use for leading my students to understand Shakespeare more easily are performance and multimedia. Sometimes I would play in some professional stages. So helping my students practice Shakespearean productions is easy and interesting to me. Usually the number of my students is about 50, and I devide them into 5 groups. Each group is in charge of each one act. They all perform their own acts just before the end of the semester. And I videotape their performances. Seeing the video film in the next class just after the performance, we - students and I - discuss the performace and compare the text or some other productions with their own performace. And I use several film versions of the same play. I want to compare each other in order that my students understand how variously the same lines or the same scemes can be understood and produced. Now I am trying to let my students use another method to approach Shakespeare. Namely, internet. I wish my students and many other foreign students share their ideas and questions, as well as getting new information through internet. I wonder how helpful and effective the new strategy is to my students.

Russell I. Becker, Sr.

TO: Richard III Society 24 December 1998 FROM: Russell I. Becker, Sr. English Department Chair John F. Kennedy High School, Tammuning, Guam P.O. Box 4555 USPO AAFB Yigo, Guam 96929-4555 brbecker@kuentos.guam.net My name is Russell Becker, and on behalf of my students and myself, I wish to thank you for your assistance and cooperation. I teach English-401 (12th grade English) at John F. Kennedy High School in Tammuning, Guam. I am a 53 year old retired U.S. Marine and have been teaching here on Guam for eight years. This year my classes consist of a mixture of local Chamorro, Filipino, Micronesian, Truckese, Chuckese, Palauan, and Caucasian students. My Master's degree is from Emerson College, Boston, Massachusetts and I am well versed in English (British) literature as many of my undergraduate and graduate courses focused on this subject. This year, I chose to tackle Shakespear's Richard III with my upper level classe. At the same time the next lower level was experiencing Shakespear's Taming of the Shrew, while the two other classes were undertaking the study of Shakespear's Macbeth. Out first semester has just ended, on 18 December1998, and believe me when I say that this has been one of the most enriching experiences I have ever participated in my teaching career. The students were mesmerized with my ability to keep all of the characters in all three plays straight while teaching them simultaneously. Those students who delved into Richard III were fascinated, that is once they were able to identify all of the characters and keep them straight in their minds. To help these students, I had them work together, in cooperative learning groups, or on individual projects ranging from collages and family trees to concrete and abstract poetry. They also submitted original paintings and drawings, and chose characters to portray in oral presentations and acting sessions. The students had a blast. With the money crunch that our Department of Education is currently experiencing, along with the extreme shortage of text-books and day-to-day supplies, these books were a lifesaver. The books provided the students with an experience that they may otherwise have never encountered. I will use these books to teach Richard III again next year. I explained to the students that Shakespear's play was based on Thomas Moore's account and that he was Richard's enemy. Using the information from the other novel that you also so graciously provided, The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey, I was able to provide an eye-opening experience to the students. This novel provided the other side of the story and helped them to see Richard as a complete person and let them make up their own minds as to his true character and not rely solely on that provided by what Moore portrays or what Shakespear acts out. Don't get me wrong, I envy Shakespear; as he is truly the master of the stage. I am forwarding the letters of thanks that the students have written and their comments to Laura Blanchard of the Philadelphia Chapter in hopes that she will be able to distribute them to all of those that were able to help us to attain the much needed texts. These letters were not corrected or edited so you can see the language difficulties that these students may have had to deal with along with the cultural differences. Of those students that studied Richard III, not one of them had a failing grade for the semester. Thank you again for all you have done and provided for us. Sincerely, Russell I. Becker, Sr. P.S. I have just started teaching Richard III this year to accelerated 7th graders at Baker County Middle School in Macclenny, Fl. They are having a ball with the "intro" portion of the historical era...they liken it to a soap opera. Since they had absolutely no prior knowledge of this era or of Richard III, I thought it absolutely necessary to give them a small background lesson on how this story began. I teach Language Arts, not history, but then, being a lover of literature, I find it hard at all times to teach one without the other. They are now coloring pictures of all the kings from Edward III to Henry Tudor in order to give them a visual picture of the progression of kingship during this time. That seems to help them stay focused on who was on the throne, who was seeking the throne (by hook or crook), and who ultimately gained the throne. I hope to be able to show the historical Richard III as well as Shakespeare's Richard, and send them off searching for their own decision about the infamous Richard.

This web site makes me very happy!! I have looked for suggestions for weeks to help me in this endeavor - so you have me hooked. I will mention here that the coloring book of The Kings and Queens of England has been very helpful so far, as each picture has a small verse giving information about the monarch and, in some cases, his downfall.

I will attempt this semester to teach this play as analagous to a Mafia story--jealousy, lust for power, lack of morals and morality, in a sense RIII as directed by Martin Scorcese! I want to use the Ian McKellan adaptation for ease of uinderstanding of the play, and Al Pacino's documentary LOOKING FOR RICHARD for the investigation of what is the play all about. This is my first time attempting to teach RIII. I hope I can do it justice.

I was hoping that some people would know of some interesting resources that would help me, I am especially interested in stuff supporting Richard's innocence. Some sites that have been especially helpful to me have the r3 site, especially the essays, and the Official Royal Home Page. Also, I have found that it is easier to find things on any royalty by going to Yahoo! The UK and Ireland Page, under the heading of Society they have a subgroup on Royalty.

The class reads Shakespeare's version, then Tey's Daughter of Time. After that they research on the "real" vs. the dramatic Richard. The resources are excellent, but we have tried to do a mock trial and I feel it doesn't quite work because we don't know the structure of a mock trial. Has anyone else done a mock trial? I teach the Introductory Class on Shakespeare at John Cabot University in Rome. Classes are usually 20-25 students representing about ten and more nationaliiies. Many students have personal experience of political turmoil and power struggles in their home countries. This makes Richard III very relevant. However, I resist an over concentration on political science aspects. I approach Richard III as a challenge to actors...understanding of the inner motivation that produces certain words and exchanges between the characters in a scene.

My students are seniors studying British Literature at Irvine High School, Irvine, California, U.S.A.(a public high school. I am teaching Richard as both a dramatic figure and a historical figure. We began with Shakespeare's Richard III, Went through Al Pacino's Looking for Richard and ended with Josephine Tey's Daughter of Time. Students are now involved in doing research, primarily on the Web, to prove or disprove that the real Richard III was as Shakespeare and Thomas More presented him.

This is the first time I have taught this unit and am kind of making it up as I go along. "Oh, Tey, Can You See?" has been a great help as has been the Richard III Society site. I am trying to use the mystery of Richard III and the two young princes to excite young minds. An additional goal has been the integration of Web research. Irvine High is a technologically advanced public school and every attempt is being made to enhance the ability of the students to take advantage of the potential of the internet.

I am actually producing/directing/acting Richard III (together with King Henry VI Part 3) this upcoming December. I'm looking for people to sponsor it who are interested in the crook-back, and Shakespeare's wonderful works in an Off-Broadway venue.

For a few years, I have been teaching Richard III in my community college English courses. I start the students off with Al Pacino's movie "Looking for Richard"; then I have them read Shakespeare's play, and then I introduce them to the historical Richard by way of a lecture on the historical background of the play, often using Josephine Tey's "The Daughter of Time" as a foil for Shakespeare. Also helpful in getting across the history is a film called "The Missing Princes of England" which is put out by the History Channel. I get the full gamut of student responses from bored indifference to the occasional student who is determined to prove Richard innocent of the murders of the princes.

Mr. Smigelski, I am in your friday mourning English 1 A class. If you have not dropped me from your class, please do so. I feel that I can pass your class, but that I started the class on the wrong note. I missed the first couple of assignments, and I failed your tests and essays. Please contact me if there is anything that you need to tell me at: (925) 803-6977 or pgr. (925) 509-4711. Thank You.

I don't teach anything to do with Richard III

Basically I'm preparing a ten minute presentation and the title is 'a horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse'. It needs to be geared either towards preparation for battle or methods of transport in battle or something along those lines bringing in a military element to it all and I wondered if anyone had any ideas? If you do could you please e-mail me as I haven't found a chat board on this site yet! Thanks in advance, Jen

i'm doing a lecture on the heritage side of the battle of bosworth for a graduate class

I'm fascinated in the upkeep and maintance of the site on Ambion Hill. Any heritage releated issues would be extremley useful such as... 1) why was the site commisioned 2) who designed the make-up of the site and why 3) How heritage debates link in with Bosworth 4) reactions to criticisms put forward against the site 5) how a historical defintion can be placed on a site that is so controversial considering the vagueness of its primary sources

i am a student at a school in las vegas. i have been intregued in good king richard since the age of eleven. i study richard as historical figure as a pose to a dramatic figure. i attend high school.

i think that this is a great site to teach the STORY,and not legend of Richard the third.I do have suggestions though. i think that the world isent really trying hard enough to tell the story of real richard and i think this site should do more of that.
