BARLEY HALL
Give a Present to the Past

Barley Hall is a jewel in York’s rich and varied history. When, in the early 1980s, the shell of a 14th and 15th century townhouse was discovered it was immediately obvious that this was a rare find, a part of our medieval heritage. The building was purchased by the York Archaeological Trust and carefully restored to its former glory to offer people a unique chance to step back in time to the middle ages.hall1a

Now run by an independent charitable trust Barley Hall is open throughout the year allowing visitors and locals alike to visit this wonderful site. As a living history museum the Hall offers a hands-on environment that allows people to experience history first hand through the lives of its mediaeval residents, the Snawsell family. The Hall is partially furnished as it would have been in the time of Alderman William Snawsell, Mayor of York and friend of Richard as Duke of Gloucester. Our audio tour contains many friendly references to Richard III.

The work to refurnish the Hall is continuing with the completion of rooms such as the stunning Great Hall. School and other groups visit us for fun-packed visits that have been extended thanks to us receiving a Heritage Lottery Grant for our education programme. Regular living history events, period and craft fairs, drama, music and poetry all add to the Barley Hall experience. As do our family activity days. Many people have also hired the Hall for memorable functions, parties and weddings.

All of these successes have been a real joy for the Hall’s small team of hardworking Trustees and staff and its team of loyal volunteers. As a charity we are always working to ensure funds continue to come in to help us continue this development. Money from admissions, shop sales and functions all help but, sadly, it is not always enough. This is why we have launched a special appeal in the run up to Christmas – always a time for giving. The appeal will be launched by the Lord Mayor of York on Monday 21 November and we are asking people who love history and the craft skills exemplified by Barley Hall to Give a Present to the Past and so help to preserve this wonderful project into the future. Donations of any size are welcome and there is also the opportunity to join our organization of Friends or our Guild of sponsors and so become on ongoing part of Barley Hall’s future.

This beautiful old building has a thousand tales to tell. It has seen individuals, families and businesses thrive for over 500 years and the warmth of this history in integral to the building. Please do consider making a donation. You can give on-line at our web site – www.barleyhall.org.uk. More substantial donations can have IRS tax deductible status if given through The Foundation for the Preservation of the Archaeological Heritage, (State of New York Registered Charity File no. 027941).
