Nigel Hawthorne:
George, Duke of Clarence


Nigel Hawthorne created the role of the King in the play THE MADNESS OF KING GEORGE, which also toured Europe and the United States and received the 1992 Laurence Olivier Award and the London Evening Standard Award for his performance. He was nominated for an Oscar as Best Actor in 1995 for his role in the film version, THE MADNESS OF KING GEORGE.

Other film credits include GANDHI, FIREFOX, THE CHAIN and DEMOLITION MAN.

Nigel Hawthorne was born in Coventry, England and brought up in South Africa. His versatile range has encompassed roles in theatre and television as well as film.

On the London stage Hawthorne starred in HAPGOOD, UNCLE VANYA, OTHERWISE ENGAGED, THE MAGISTRATE, ACROSS THE GARDENS OF ALLAH, PRIVATES ON PARADE and SHADOWLANDS. SHADOWLANDS also took him to Broadway where he received the Tony Award and the New York Outer Circle Award as Best Actor of 1991.

His many television appearances include the BBC comedy series, YES, MINISTER, and YES PRIME MINISTER, for which he won BAFTA Awards (British Academy of Film & TV Arts) for Best Comedy Performance in 1981, 1982, 1986 and 1988 and an ACE cable Award nomination.
