TOUR ITINERARY

June 22:

Welcome to Richard III's England! Following an early morning arrival at Manchester Airport, we will board our coach and travel through the beautiful countryside of the Yorkshire Dales to our charming coaching inn in Wensleydale. The remainder of the day is free to soak up the ambience of the English countryside and recover from jet lag! This evening, we will enjoy the first of many delectable dinners.

OVERNIGHT (3 Nts.): North Yorkshire

June 23:

Our first day of sightseeing will begin in the charming little town of Middleham, where we will greet our friends from the Yorkshire Branch. We will have ample time to explore the castle (Richard's favorite home!) and parish church and to chat over a tasty pub lunch. Second on our agenda is mighty Richmond Castle, standing high above its market town and river. We conclude the day with a visit to Mt. Grace Priory, a rare and remarkable medieval foundation of the Cistercian order, in which monks lived a solitary life in self-contained, little apartments, somewhat like medieval condos!

June 24:

Today, we'll visit Pickering Castle, once popular with medieval kings as a hunting lodge, and the parish church, where some of England's finest medieval wall paintings are to be found. Next, a short stop at the modest little church in Sheriff Hutton to view the tomb believed by many to be that of Richard's son, Edward. Our afternoon will be spent in the marvelous ancient city of York, with its magnificent Minster and warren of medieval streets. You will have several hours at leisure to shop and explore York's many treasures before returning to our hotel!

June 25:

Turning south this morning, we begin with a visit to the impressive 12th C. castle at Conisburgh, the birthplace of Richard III's grandfather and property of the Dukes of York for several centuries. Though strangely modern in appearance, Conisburgh is one of England's earliest stone castles! Our second venue will be "Hardwick Hall, more glass than wall". This nonpareil that time and history have miraculously preserved since the 16th century was built by the wealthy and powerful "Bess of Hardwick", lady-in-waiting to Elizabeth I, and contains a notable collection of furniture, needlework and tapestries. A visit to Lord Hasting's fine castle at Ashby-de-la-Zouch concludes a rewarding day.

OVERNIGHT (1 Night): Melton Mowbray

June 26:

This morning features our special outing to Bosworth Battlefield, where we will enjoy an excellent guided tour of the battlefield and will hang our lovely American Branch memorial wreath at Sutton Cheyney church. After lunch, we make our way to Kenilworth. Rich in history, Kenilworth Castle is one of the grandest ruins in England with a chapel and Great Hall built by John of Gaunt; Richard III stayed here on his 1483 progress. Finally, a comfortable drive brings us to the beautiful Malvern Hills. Richard III was actively involved in the15th century reconstruction of Great Malvern Priory Church; and the day ends with a visit to this gracious place of worship. During our stay in this part of England, we look forward to the company of friends from the Worcestershire Branch.

OVERNIGHT (2 Nights): Great Malvern area

June 27:

Today will be devoted to exploring the Welsh Border country. Although there are few specific Ricardian sites in this lovely part of the country, we know that a young Richard III was often in the area in his various official capacities and would have been well acquainted with it. We begin with a stop to view the obelisk at Mortimers Cross where, in 1461, Edward defeated a Lancastrian army and experienced his vision of three suns. Also included will be a tour through the charming medieval black-and-white villages typical of this area, as well as visits to the marvelous little Norman gem of a church at Kilpeck and the magnificent red sandstone ruins of Goodrich Castle.

June 28:

Up bright and early, we will first enjoy a drive through the scenic Wye Valley to the splendid ruins of Tintern Abbey. In its peaceful setting, Tintern Abbey has been celebrated in poems and paintings over the centuries. Richard III visited the pleasant city of Exeter in 1483 when dealing with the uprising in the West Country; and our afternoon will be spent in Exeter, with visits to its Cathedral, Bishop's Palace and Guildhall. Exhibiting a purity of style, the cathedral boasts the longest continuous length of Gothic vaulting in the world, fine medieval wall paintings and numerous other attractive features. The Guildhall is one of the oldest civic buildings in England, with a fine roof sporting corbels that depict the bear and ragged staff of Warwick the Kingmaker.

OVERNIGHT (1 Night): Exeter area

June 29:

Today, we travel to the fair city of Salisbury, where Richard is known to have stayed in 1483 when putting down the Duke of Buckingham's rebellion. En route, we will pay a visit to beautiful 15th century Sherborne Abbey in Dorset and explore the picturesque ruins of Old Wardour Castle, built in the 14th century by John, 5th Lord Lovel. Our day concludes with a visit to glorious Salisbury Cathedral. Built in only 38 years and claiming the tallest spire in England, Salisbury is the only cathedral of absolutely uniform design. Its many memorials and effigies include the tomb of Henry VII's gigantic standard-bearer, Sir John Cheyney.

OVERNIGHT (2 Nights): Salisbury area

June 30:

The lovely, unspoiled county of Dorset is our destination today. This morning, we hope to be joined by members of the Dorset Group as we explore the rugged remains of Corfe Castle, standing high in the Purbeck Hills. Here, in 1462, a 9-year-old Richard was appointed Constable and Clarence was granted the manor house by Edward IV. On to Bere Regis, the birthplace of Cardinal John Morton, who built the church tower, gave a fine timber roof and founded the Morton Chapel in the north aisle. Built in the year of Richard's death on the site of King Athelstan's Palace, Athelhampton is one of England's most attractive medieval manor houses, with a fine Great Hall. We'll end the day visiting this beautiful family home and its lovely formal garden which features a fine 15th C. dovecote.

July 1:

Our final two days will be spent in the southeast, the delightful "Garden of England". Today, the first venue will be the handsome town of Lewes with its early Norman castle.. Second on our agenda is Alfriston Clergy House, a delightful thatched medieval hall house with cottage gardens, which was the first acquisition of the National Trust in 1896. Our final venue today will be the picturesque moated manor house of Ightham Mote, built in the 14th and 15th centuries with later Tudor additions. A Grade I listed site and Scheduled Monument, Ightham Mote, which is of enormous appeal to all who are interested in medieval history, has recently undergone extensive conservation.

OVERNIGHT (2 Nights): Kent/East Sussex

July 2:

This, our last day of touring, will begin with a brief visit to historic Battle Abbey, built by William the Conquerer in thanksgiving for his victory at the Battle of Hastings. Today, the abbey includes an imposing gatehouse and the impressive remains of the dormitory. Next, on to the peaceful ruins of Eastwell Church, burial place of Richard Plantagenet, widely believed to be the unacknowledged natural son of Richard III. This afternoon, we find ourselves in the town of Rochester, much featured in the novels of Charles Dickens who is buried in the cathedral. Rochester's castle, built in 1127 by the Archbishop of Canterbury, is the mightiest example of Norman military architecture in England. Though modest in size, the marvelous cathedral can claim the finest recessed Norman doorway, the oldest stalls and monks' benches, and the largest and most beautiful crypt in all England. Our final stop will be at Eltham Palace, only recently opened to the public. Once a favored residence of Kings, who enjoyed archery, bowling and jousting in the grounds, Eltham is today a masterpiece of Modern design (1930's) but retains the magnificent Great Hall built by Edward IV. Boarding our coach for the final time, we reach London in the late afternoon, replete with memories of a truly special tour.

OVERNIGHT (1 Night): Central London
