[SORRY -- this tour is fully subscribed as of 20 January. A summer tour of Ricardian Britain, sponsored by the American Branch, is offered every year.]

You are invited to join us for a truly delightful touring experience as we explore medieval England, the England of Richard III. This year’s Ricardian tour is perfect for those with a keen interest in Richard III and in England’s medieval period in general. We are especially pleased that we will have the opportunity to attend both the Middleham Festival and the Tewkesbury Medieval Fair; and our itinerary also includes a veritable feast of sites with Ricardian connections -- more than twenty! Included (among others) are: the ancient city of York; Barnard Castle, Middleham, Bolton, Richmond, Raby, Warwick and Ludlow castles; the parish churches at Middleham, Sheriff Hutton, Sutton Cheyney and Fotheringhay; Lincoln Cathedral, the abbeys at Crowland and Tewkesbury, as well as Great Malvern Priory; Minster Lovell Hall and Gainsborough Old Hall. We will enjoy both a re-enactment of the Battle of Tewkesbury and our usual excellent guided tour of Bosworth Battlefield, where Richard III lost his crown and his life. As a added bonus, at several sites, we will be warmly received and accompanied on our sightseeing by old and new Ricardian friends from various English branches and groups -- always special occasions for all of us!

Also included in the itinerary will be other outstanding venues such as England’s finest fortified medieval manor house, the beautiful ruins of Rievaulx Abbey, a 14th century tithe barn, and an ancient almshouse with a fascinating history.

You will enjoy 2 nights in London and 10 days of leisurely touring in a comfortable mid-size coach, with a friendly, helpful escort and driver/courier. Our accommodation, located in attractive market towns or villages, will be in charming smaller hotels and coaching inns with the highest ratings in their class. Emphasis is placed on quality, individuality, comfort, excellent food and a warm welcome. All rooms will have private facilities and full amenities. Most of our lunches will be at village pubs of character, which are recommended for their food. Your enthusiastic tour coordinator/escort will be Linda Treybig, member of the Richard III Society since 1979, specialist on travel in Great Britain, and tour coordinator/escort of 13 previous Ricardian tours.

Group size is limited to a maximum of 12 (minimum of 6) with space available on a "first-come, first-served" basis. Note: Preference will be given to members of the Richard III Society, but members of the general public are welcome as well. A number of Ricardians have already expressed a strong interest in the 2003 tour, so please register as early as possible and join our friendly little band of travelers for a really memorable tour of fifteenth century England!

LAND TOUR RATE & PAYMENT SCHEDULE: $2,695.00. (Single Supplement: $280.00). Deadline for reservation form and deposit of $250.00 is February 25, 2003. Balance in full is payable by April 20, 2003.

TOUR ITINERARY

Sat., July 5: Morning arrival at Manchester Airport and transfer to our charming hotel in North Yorkshire. You will have the rest of the day free to recover from jet lag and just soak up the ambience of this stunning and totally unspoiled area of England. This evening, we’ll enjoy the first of many delectable dinners together.

OVERNIGHT (4 nights): Yorkshire Dales

Sun., July 6: You’re in for an exciting introduction of Richard’s England today! With the annual Middleham Festival in full swing, we will enjoy a panoply of fun-filled medieval events held in the grounds of Richard’s favorite dwelling, Middleham Castle, where we’ll greet old friends from the Yorkshire Branch and mix with Ricardian visitors from far and near. Also included will be a visit to Middleham church and lunch at a local pub. A mid-afternoon trip to nearby Bolton Castle, once owned by the influential Lord Scrope (one of Richard III’s loyal followers), brings to a conclusion a most rewarding day!

Mon., July 7: First on our agenda today will be a visit to the extensive ruins of Rievaulx Abbey, an early 12th C. Cistercian monastic foundation of remarkable beauty and peace. Following a short stop at Sheriff Hutton church (with the tomb thought possibly to be that of Richard’s son, Edward), we will have an afternoon at leisure in the ancient city of York. In its warren of medieval streets, you’ll discover a wealth of historical sites, including glorious York Minster, the Merchant Adventurers Hall (the finest guildhall in Europe), and much more, as well as many fine shops. And why not take time for a short walk on the city walls?

Tues., July 8: Our fourth day begins with a trip to Barnard Castle;, where we will explore the marvelous ruined castle granted to Richard as part of his Neville inheritance. (You can try your luck at finding his boar emblem!) Just up the road lies Raby Castle, once the home of Cecily Neville. This great medieval castle still retains a magnificent great hall and a sizeable medieval kitchen. Our day concludes with a stop in the attractive market town of Richmond, where you’ll have time to visit the keep of Richmond Castle (granted to Richard III in 1478), hit the shops, or enjoy a lovely stroll along the river below the castle walls.

Weds., July 9: As we travel south today, our first venue will be Gainsborough Old Hall, the engaging home of a prosperous city official who entertained Richard III in the course of his travels -- always a favorite with Ricardians. Next we’ll visit magnificent Lincoln Cathedral, the seat of Bishop John Russell, Richard’s Chancellor. And finally, we’ll make a short stop at the Angel & Royal in Grantham to view the historical room where Richard received the Great Seal during his campaign to put down Buckingham’s rebellion in 1483.

OVERNIGHT (2 nights): Near Leicester

Thurs., July 10: Up bright and early, we will first visit Crowland Abbey (source of the Croyland Chronicle), where Edward IV and a young Richard stayed in 1469. Our next venue today is beautiful Fotheringhay church, which contains several treasures, including a House of York stained glass window, the tomb of Richard’s parents and possibly of his brother, Edmund, Earl of Rutland, and a rare pulpit given by Edward IV. Today’s itinerary also includes Lyddington Bede House, a place with a fascinating history: first a home of the Bishops of Lincoln, then a priests’ house of prayer and, finally (from the 17th century to the 1930’s!), an almshouse. If time permits, we will also visit Castle Rising, with its fine keep and a notably preserved staircase.

Fri., July 11: This, our banner day, features an excellent guided tour of Bosworth Battlefield and the hanging of our American Branch memorial wreath at Sutton Cheyney church. In the afternoon, we will pay a visit to Warwick Castle, the world-famous home of the powerful "Kingmaker", birthplace of Anne Neville and host to Richard III during his coronation progress. OPTIONAL: If you are a theater buff, we can arrange a drop-off in Stratford-on-Avon for Royal Shakespeare Theatre production this evening! (Tickets and transportation to hotel at your expense.)

OVERNIGHT (3 nights): The Cotswolds

Sat., July 12: It’s off to the fair today! On the way, we’ll stop to view an outstanding example of a 14th century tithe barn. Then, the remainder of the day will be spent at the colorful Tewkesbury Medieval Festival with fun for all -- medieval craft exhibitions, market stalls, sideshows and many forms of medieval entertainment. The day, which will culminate with an exciting re-enactment of the Battle of Tewkesbury, will also feature a visit to splendid Tewkesbury Abbey, which figured prominently in the battle.

Sun., July 13: Stokesay Castle, England’s finest fortified manor house, claims our attention this morning. After exploring this outstanding 14th C. home in its lovely pastoral setting, we will make our way to mighty Ludlow Castle. Set high above its bustling market town and river, Ludlow Castle was for several years the home of Edward IV’s elder son. Richard III spent some time and effort on Great Malvern Priory, one of his many renovation projects, and our day concludes with a visit to this gracious late medieval church with its fine stained glass windows. (We also hope to include a short stop at Little Malvern Priory church.)

Mon., July 14: Now let’s unwind! We will spend the final day of our travels meandering through one of the most captivating areas of England -- the picturesque countryside and quaint golden villages of the Cotswolds. The day will be capped off with afternoon tea and a visit to the beautiful remains of Minster Lovell Hall (home of Richard’s most loyal friend, Sir Francis Lovell), exquisitely situated on the banks of the River Windrush. Boarding our coach for the last time, we head for the great cosmopolitan city of London, arriving in the late afternoon.

OVERNIGHT (2 nights): Central London

Tues., July 15: Our tour officially concludes this morning with a visit to distinguished Society of Antiquaries, where we have been invited to view an exciting array of items relating to Richard III and his reign. Note: This afternoon, there will be an optional visit to glorious St. George’s Chapel (tomb of Edward IV) at Windsor Castle. Tour members are invited to join their escort for a final dinner together tonight!

Weds., July 16: Today we bid farewell to England and return home, replete with memories of an exceptional tour!
